Stalls

Stalls should be roomy enough so a cow won’t get into trouble lying against the wall, with room for you to work with a calf-puller if necessary. Stalls 12 by 12 feet (366 × 366 cm) are minimum; 12 by 14 (366 × 427 cm) is better. If panels are moveable rather than solid partitions, this can give some leeway if you have a tight situation when using a calf-puller or have a cow lying too close to the wall.

Also, if panels are moveable, you can catch a cow behind one, pushing it tightly against her, with a rope behind her (holding the panel) so she can’t back up. Then you don’t have to tie her up or take her to a headcatcher or chute for checking or correcting a malpresentation or pulling the calf. Just swing the panel away when you’re finished or if she goes down. If she lies down, she’s not in the predicament that she might be in a headcatcher or chute; just move the panel away from her and continue pulling the calf.

When making panels for barn stalls, make the bottom half solid (using plywood or boards) so a calf cannot stick his head through and get bashed by an aggressive cow in the next stall.
